Despite a rich and diverse history and culture, Africa has long fared poorly in the U.S. news media. If the New York Times, Newsweek or the major television networks are to be believed, the continent consists of little more than a conglomeration of bloodthirsty tribal groups stuck somewhere back in time. This website aims to dispel some of these wrong notions by describing and explaining why U.S. media images of Africa are what they are and how we can educate ourselves about the media in order to avoid being taken in by them. I’m a former journalist, now teaching journalism. I have taught reporting in Africa and researched the African media. You can email me at media.africa[at]gmail.com
Welcome back to the Sphere Melissa, you have been sorely missed. It’s great to have you back with us and the new WordPress blog design and layout for Africa Media looks good. I’ll change my blogroll URL link to your place right away.
BTW: How’s the US media handling the post-election violence in Kenya? I’ve just watched an exclusive interview on Aljazeera English TV news with the Kenyan opposition presidential candidate Obinga. You might want to check that out if the broadcast is available back in the States.
